Year In Pictures: 2010/05/23

For as long as I have lived here, I have harboured a tentative plan to grown herbs in the back yard. To that end I went as far as to clear a patch of ground in preparation for herbs, but it never progressed beyond that. In the intervening years, brush along the fence grew into trees that shaded the area too much for most herbs to grow. Last fall we split the cost with our neighbour to remove all of the trees along the fence, and now I have enough daylight to plant my little garden.

Only a few of the herbs are pictured here. Pictured here, from top to bottom, and left to right(ish) are:

Basil, strawberries, thyme, more basil, chives, English lavender, peppermint and some more thyme. Not pictured here are rosemary, parsley, cilantro, spearmint, tarragon, another strawberry plant, and at least one or two that I know I have forgotten.

I was originally going to try to capture the whole garden in a shot, and I may do that later in the summer when the plants are bigger and don't get completely lost in the background. I shot this one at 1/180th of a second, with an aperture of f/9.5. I sharpened it a touch, and created a slight desaturation overlay for the area around the herbs to make them stand out a bit more.
